Police: Two children brought to hospital, one with life-threatening injuries in early Thursday Columbia crash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A child was rushed to an area hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after a crash Thursday morning in southeast Columbia, a Columbia Fire Department assistant chief said.

Police and firefighters were sent a little before 9 a.m. to a two-vehicle crash at Ponderosa Street and Discovery Parkway. Five people were involved and four people were hurt, Assistant Chief Jeffrey Heidenreich said.

The Columbia Police Department said in a Thursday evening press release that the collision involved a 2012 Chevrolet Impala -- driven by Toni M. Cagle, 35, of Columbia -- and a 2013 Hyundai Elantra -- driven by Trevor J. Kocour, 29, of Columbia.

The Chevy was traveling northbound on South Ponderosa Street, while the Hyundai was traveling westbound on Discovery Parkway, according to the release. The Hyundai hit the passenger side of the Chevy.

Cagle was wearing a seatbelt and had nonlife-threatening injuries and later went to an area hospital. An adult passenger had nonlife-threatening injuries, one child had serious injuries and another child in the Impala had life-threatening injuries, the release stated. Their names and ages were not released.

All three were brought to an area hospital. Neither of the children were wearing seatbelts, the release stated.

Kocour was wearing a seatbelt and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. He was also brought to an area hospital.

First responders closed the roadafter the crash, according to a public alert from Boone County emergency dispatchers.

An update on the child's condition was not available.
