Power companies prepare for possible outages Wednesday night

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Power companies in Mid-Missouri are ready for potential outages Wednesday as the area deals with strong winds.

Wind gusts could range anywhere between 35 and 50 mph and last overnight into Thursday, according to the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team.

Meredith Hoenes with Boone Electric Cooperative said the organization will have employees on call. Hoenes said drivers should watch out for downed power lines.

"If you happen to see power lines on the roadway stop and turn around. Do not drive over them. Electricity is something that is not visible, so you do not know if those lines are energized or not. It's safe to stay 10 feet away or farther," Hoenes said.

All around Columbia you'll see wind gusts blowing leaves, Christmas decorations, and even stop signs.

Boone Electrics Corporation said if you find yourself without power it's best to stay put in your home.

The cooperative says all electrical crews who are on call are geared up and preparing for any outcome of the windstorm.

Ameren said that high wind speeds like the ones expected Wednesday can blow trees into power lines, which can cause serious damage.

Lucas Klein with Ameren said it's important for people to stay clear of fallen power lines especially if they're near pools of water or shrubs. Klein said sometimes wires fall into these areas and it can be hard to see.

Ameren recommends that people at home have a charged battery, flashlight, and update their information on the Ameren app. This way the company can contact you if an outage occurs.

"Our management team is alert that the threat of weather and damage that comes from that weather out there and so we're making sure that we have our crews in a ready state to respond if and when damage should occur," Klein said.

The City of Columbia also has crews prepared to respond Wednesday night.

"Our electric distribution crews are on standby and will respond as quickly as possible to address any issues. On top of our scheduled crew, most of our lineworkers are available to respond should major situations arise," Matt Nestor said.
