Task Force recommends contextualization sign for Thomas Jefferson Statue

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Some changes could soon get approved to a controversial statue on Mizzou's campus.

A task force recommends the school add a sign near the Thomas Jefferson statue that explains his accomplishments, the policies he supported and that the former president also owned slaves.

UM System President Mun Choi created the task force last summer after organizations and students asked for its removal.

The board of curators are expected to consider the recommendations.

A petition to have the statue remove began in June 2020 but the university opted to go with the task force to find the solution.

In July 2020, several people were arrested for tampering with the statue after she allegedly threw red paint on it.

In October, Mizzou 600 held a protest to try and get the university to remove the statue.
