Dozens of protesters block downtown Columbia intersection

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A group of about 100 people gathered to protest in downtown Columbia on Thursday night.

The crowd walked from the columns on Mizzou's campus to the intersection at 8th and Broadway near city hall. Just before 9 p.m., protesters laid down in the middle of the intersection.

Thursday's demonstration is the latest in a series of protests in Columbia over the last couple of weeks.

The protests started in Columbia, and across the country, in response to the death of George Floyd. Floyd died at the hands of Minneapolis Police on Memorial Day.

About 100 people participated in Thursday's protest. ABC 17 news observed one police vehicle near the protest downtown.

A smaller group of about 50 gathered Wednesday night. The largest protest of the week was on Sunday, when thousands of people marched through the city. Most nights, members of the Columbia Police Department were seen walking with protesters. The department had also been using drones to help monitor the demonstrations.
