COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man and woman in their 80s suffered serious injuries when their vehicle was broadsided by another vehicle that ran a red light Wednesday on Stadium Boulevard, police say.

Reid W. Browning, 22, of Columbia was driving west on Stadium Boulevard in a Jeep Commander SUV when he ran a red light at College Park Drive, the Columbia Police Department said. Browning hit a Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by Billy "Ray" Smith, 89, of Columbia, according to a news release.

Smith and his passenger, Ellen "Jane" Smith, 87, of Columbia suffered serious injuries and were taken to Univerity of Missouri Hospital.

Jane Smith was partially thrown from the minivan, which rolled onto its passenger side after being hit on the driver's side, the release said.

The Smiths were each wearing a seat belt, police said.

Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash but the investigation continues, police said.
