Cole County Public Works to replace pipes after fuel leak

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Cole County Public Works continues to work in the area of a fuel leak that happened last week at Lincoln University's Alan T. Busby Farm.

The cleanup was, for the most part, completed last Wednesday, Cole County Public Works Director Eric Landwehr said. Public works is now focusing its efforts on its own property, where the spill originated.

Last Friday, public works decided to replace the stormwater pipes that fuel was getting into. Landwehr said the current pipes are older and plastic.

When they replace the pipes, it will completely remove the contaminated soil as well, Landwehr said.

The process to replace the pipes will take about one or two weeks, depending on the weather. That process has already started.

The cost to replace the stormwater pipes will be about $125,000, according to Landwehr. Landwehr said the department has identified the source of the leak, which might have been caused by a defective part.
