Man sentenced to more than 15 years in prison in death of Carl DeBrodie
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A man charged in the death of Carl DeBrodie was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison on Wednesday.
A federal judge in Jefferson City sentenced Anthony R. Flores to 15 years and eight months in prison after he pleaded guilty to failing to provide medical care for DeBrodie, resulting in injury or death. He has two weeks to appeal the sentencing.
Several of carl DeBrodie's family and loved ones, including his brother and former caregiver, spoke on his behalf asking the judge for justice.
"I will never be more heartbroken than I am right now, we will suffer constantly," Mary Martin, DeBrodie's former caregiver said.
Flores made a statement to the council before getting sentenced.
"I would like to apologize to the whole family, I will live with this my whole life, all I can do now is apologize," he said. "I regret everything I've done."
Flores's attorney asked the court to shorten the sentence to 135 months, but that request was denied.
Flores is the second person sentenced to serve time in federal prison after Sherry Paulo was sentenced to 17 and a half years in prison on Tuesday.
Another man who is charged with DeBrodie's death is set for sentencing Wednesday afternoon. Anthony R.K. Flores pleaded guilty to lying to Fulton police about the last time he saw DeBrodie.
Court records say his sentence is set to be handed down at 3 p.m.
Flores worked as a caregiver in DeBrodie's group home when he and Sherry Paulo took DeBrodie to their personal residence despite his declining health. The two decided not to seek medical care for DeBrodie and he died, authorities said.
Investigators found DeBrodie's body encased in concrete inside a Fulton storage unit in 2017. Authorities said he likely died sometime in 2016.
Court documents say Anthony R.K. Flores told police he saw DeBrodie at a barbecue in April 2017. The plea agreement said Flores' mother, Paulo, told him to tell people he saw DeBrodie there.
