MSHP: investigation into Boone County Jail death complete

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Officials confirm an investigation has been completed after a man died at the Boone County Jail.

Missouri Division of Drug and Crime Control confirmed to ABC 17 News on Wednesday the department has finished its investigation into the death of William Gipson.

Gipson, 43, of Ashland, died at the Boone County Jail on Aug. 23 after he was arrested by the Ashland Police Department.

A spokesperson for the Division of Drug and Crime Control said investigators plan to meet and discuss the findings with the Boone County Prosecutor's Office "this week."

Boone County prosecutor Roger Johnson said the meeting is not yet scheduled, but both sides plan to meet soon.

Ashland police told ABC 17 that in August, Gipson was arrested for first-degree property damage and second-degree tampering with the property of another.

Boone County Sheriff's Office said in a statement, while trying to book him into the jail he was "uncooperative and was physically restrained."

"Boone County Jail personnel immediately responded to Mr. Gipson to provide aid and summoned medical personnel for assistance," the Boone County Sheriff's Office said in the statement. "Mr. Gipson then became unresponsive and was provided CPR by Boone County Jail personnel and medical staff. Unfortunately, efforts to revive Mr. Gipson were unsuccessful and he died."

ABC 17 News has requested a copy of Gipson's autopsy report.
