Mental health evaluation ordered for suspect in 2022 McKee Street shooting
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
One of the suspects charged in the 2022 McKee Street deadly shooting has been suspended while waiting on a mental health evaluation.
According to online court records, a judge signed the order on Friday for Daniel Ayers to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. This comes after a motion was filed in July asking for the examination.
Ayers' Public Defender wrote in a motion, he has acted erratically when talking with counsel and said beliefs that are not consistent with reality.
The motion states Ayers refuses to communicate with his defense team and refuses to appear by video at scheduled hearings.
Ayers is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action in connection to a shooting that killed fifteen-year-old Aubry Doxley.
A psychiatrist will determine if Ayers is mentally fit to proceed with the case or if he needs to be treated.
A hearing is set for October 25 at the Boone County Courthouse. Ayers is currently being held at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.
Three other men were charged in connection to the shooting. Tavan Eric Williams-Patrick, Oscar Ashford and Samarion Robins were all charged with second-degree murder and other charges. Their jury trials are set for Winter of 2025.
