Pinnacles park in Boone County needs money for repairs

BOONE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ) -

For many, these 77 acres in northern Boone County are a special place.

About 20,000 people visit each year.

The Pinnacles Youth Park was created to be a place for outdoor exploring and discovery.  And for the Boone County Pinnacles Youth Foundation keeping the gate open and maintaining a private recreational area is a challenge, said member Marilyn Toalson.

"We have to start saving it now," said Barrett, who lives on the property. He takes care of the property in exchange for lower rent.

Fundraising and private donations have kept the gates open for the last 50 years, but now, some of the repairs that are needed require some extra fundraising.

Paint is starting to chip away from the post on a shelter, and a beam has rusted through. The fireplace has missing rock and mortar.

"The shelters were built in the late 70s, all of the shelters need some general repair," Toalson said. "Which they haven't over 50 years and now it is time to do that."

Those are just some of the repairs needed at the Pinnacles to make it safe. The work could cost up to $360,000, according to the park website.

"If we don't do something now it won't be here in 50 years, that is where we are now," Toalson said.

The foundation is hosting a hog roast to raise money for park repairs from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at the park. More information about the project and a link to donate is available on the park website.
