MoDOT working with a contractor for the immediate demolition of Sorrels Overpass after truck wrecks into bridge

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

MODOT is working with a contractor for the immediate demolition of the Sorrels Overpass after a truck wrecked into the bridge Monday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F Twitter account, the demolition will involve rerouting of the interstate where one side of the interstate will be open at a time.

Officials reported one person was injured after the two-vehicle wreck that involved a Waste Management truck that had a piece of equipment extended that hit the bridge.

The driver of the Waste Management truck, 51-year-old David Obryan, is reported to be in good condition by University Hospital officials.

Gale Blomenkamp, assistant chief with the Boone County Fire Protection District, says the Waste Management truck had an arm elevated that hit the bridge causing significant damage. Blomenkamp says debris from the bridge is what caused the vehicle to lose sight and crash.

The Sorrels overpass is now closed after a truck hit the overpass Monday afternoon.

Westbound traffic slowed to a crawl on Interstate 70 just west of Columbia after a truck hit an overpass. Officials say the passing lane on I-70 westbound is now open.

A tractor-trailer hit the underside of Sorrels Overpass, a Boone County sheriff's deputy said. The crash closed a lane of I-70 westbound.

The Missouri Department of Transportation cautioned drivers about delays from the crash. Traffic was also restricted on the overpass. Traffic cameras showed a long backup on westbound I-70 from the crash.

Photos from the crash show damage to the underside of the overpass. Images from the site also appear to show damage on the road from pieces of the overpass falling.
