Former US Rep. Nancy Boyda has won the Democratic nomination for eastern Kansas’ seat in Congress

AP Political Writer

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The last Democrat to represent an eastern Kansas district in Congress has won the party’s nomination for the now-open seat. Nancy Boyda’s victory in Tuesday’s primary in the 2nd District keeps her bid for a political comeback alive. Boyda defeated public health advocate Matt Kleinmann. He was a member of the 2008 national champion University of Kansas men’s basketball team. Boyda won the nomination even though she riled up some party activists by positioning herself toward the political center. She held the seat in 2007 and 2008 then lost her race for reelection. Incumbent Republican Rep. Jake LaTurner is not seeking reelection.
