Rita Lee’s fans and family gather for final goodbye to Brazil’s ‘Queen of Rock’

SAO PAULO (AP) — Thousands of fans have joined Rita Lee Jones’ family at her wake in Sao Paulo to mourn the death of Brazil’s “Queen of Rock”. In spite of the rain, fans started lining up at 5 a.m. local time outside Sao Paulo’s planetarium in the Ibirapuera park – a place close to the artist’s heart. Rita Lee, as she was popularly known, passed away on Monday at 75. Grammy Award winner Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, two legends of Brazilian music, posted photos of themselves with Rita Lee, celebrating her unique personality as much as her art. Rita Lee left a lasting mark with her irreverence, creativity and compositions containing messages that helped introduce Brazilian society to feminism.
