SEATTLE (AP) — Jack Smith, an Associated Press photographer who captured unforgettable shots of the eruption of Mount St. Helens, the Exxon-Valdez oil spill and the Olympics during his 35-year career with the news organization, has died. He was 80. Smith passed away on Jan. 4 at his home in La Mesa, California. Smith joined the AP in Chicago in 1966 and became its first staff photographer in Portland, Oregon, in 1977. Among his other famous shots were of ice skater Tonya Harding crying during her routine at the 1994 Olympics in Norway, just after her ex-husband was implicated in an attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan, and of boxer Mike Tyson biting off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear.
