ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s government says it is ready to appoint a new army chief for the country as political turmoil and feuding continues to grip its political elite. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s office said Wednesday it had received a list of six senior army generals as nominees for the top post from the military, clearing the way for the new appointment. Sharif came to power in April after ousting former premier Imran Khan in a parliamentary vote. Khan however has accused the current army chief of conspiring against his government’s resignation, but offered no evidence over the allegations. Pakistan’s army has historically wielded huge political influence and ruled the country for half of its 75-year history.
