JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Zambia’s government has announced that a Zambian student who was serving a prison sentence in a Moscow jail has died while fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. Russian officials informed the Zambian government of 23-year old nuclear engineering student Lemekhane Nyireda’s death. Zambia is now seeking answers from Russia about how Nyirenda ended up on the battlefield in Russia’s war against Ukraine. He was serving a 9-year prison sentence for unspecific crimes. According to Zambia’s foreign minister, Nyirenda died on Sept. 22 and his remains have been transported to the Russian town of Rostov ahead of repatriation to Zambia.
