Neighborhoods evacuated near burning Georgia chemical plant

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — An official says firefighters are making progress battling a fire burning at a chemical plant in Georgia, where nearby residents are still unable to return home hours after evacuations were ordered. Glynn County commission Chairman Wayne Neal estimated roughly 100 households were ordered to evacuate Monday morning within a 1-mile radius of the Symrise chemical plant, mostly because of potential smoke hazards. Fire Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said Monday afternoon that firefighters had extinguished most of the blaze. Still he said it was too early to lift evacuations. He said he hoped it would be safe for people to go home later Monday evening.
