MILWAUKEE (AP) — Catchers are finding a way to contribute as much at the plate as behind it while withstanding the challenges that come from playing the game’s most taxing position. Major league catchers have an average OPS of .691. That’s not far from the league-wide average of .699 regardless of position. Never has a season ended with catchers having a higher average OPS than the league-wide mark. Milwaukee’s William Contreras and Kansas City’s Salvador Perez each have an OPS above .900. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Will Smith and Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman are over .800.
