SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Georgia officials asking the federal government to study another deepening of Savannah’s harbor have picked up a key endorsement in Congress. Republican U.S. Rep. Sam Graves of Missouri threw his support behind the study Monday while visiting the Port of Savannah. Graves is chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which oversees water infrastructure projects. The Army Corps of Engineers in 2022 just finished its latest expansion of Savannah’s busy shipping channel at a cost of nearly $1 billion. Georgia officials say newer amd larger cargo ships already need deeper water to reach the port with full loads at lower tides.
