COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri’s troubled House speaker has hired a former House speaker who pleaded guilty to assault as his chief of staff. Republican Speaker Dean Plocher unveiled Rod Jetton as his top aide Thursday, and Jetton’s hiring was swiftly criticized. Jetton left office in 2009 while under federal investigation on a bribery allegation. He never was indicted. But he did plead guilty in 2011 to misdemeanor assault while admitting that he hit and choked a woman during a sexual encounter in 2009. The House Democratic leader says Jetton’s hiring is an affront to domestic violence survivors. Plocher has faced calls to resign for inappropriately taking government money as reimbursement for hotels and other travel expenses.
