Escaped juvenile dies when hit by vehicle while fleeing

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis police say a 17-year-old who escaped from a detention center died when he was hit by a vehicle as he fled from police. Police Chief John Hayden says the juvenile was hit  early Tuesday on Interstate 70 as he dodged in and out of traffic. He escaped from the Juvenile Detention Center on Sept. 4. The driver who hit him stopped and is cooperating with police. Hayden says the teenager was in a car that crashed into an embankment. He and the driver jumped out of the car and fled. The boy was one of 10 juveniles who escaped the Juvenile Detention Center in recent months.
