Kansas trans sports ban nears passage; veto likely to stick

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Conservative legislators in Kansas are close to passing a ban on transgender girls and women competing in female school sports, but don’t appear to have veto-proof margins. The measure was part of a broader agenda for conservatives, which also included responding to concerns about what’s taught in public schools by making it easier for parents to try to remove materials from classrooms and libraries. The House vote Friday night on the bill dealing with transgender athletes was 74-39, and Senate approval would send the measure to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. Supporters fell 10 votes short in the House of the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.
