DEFENDERS: Valentine’s Day weekend scams

Katie Greathouse

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Couples were scammed out of millions of dollars over Valentine's Day weekend.

A report from the Federal Trade Commission shows romance scam artists made about $201 million. The FTC said the scammers build relationships with victims and ask for money during a supposed crisis.

In 2019, more than 25,000 people filed complaints with the FTC regarding the romance schemes.
