Tracking a beautiful Friday with storms impacting Father’s Day weekend

TODAY: The afternoon continues to look beautiful with a high temperature right in the low to mid 80s. Some scattered high clouds will leave plenty of sunshine for the day. A slight chance for a few raindrops does exist tonight, though most will stay dry.

TOMORROW: The early morning looks to bring some thunderstorms, mostly along and south of I-70. These should clear out by late morning to early afternoon, leaving a sunny and warm day with temps once again in the mid 80s. With more storms coming Sunday, this will be the best day to get out and celebrate the Father's Day weekend.

EXTENDED: A widespread series of thunderstorms will impact the region on Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed much of the viewing area in a Slight, or level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather. While this keeps the chance for severe threats low, it doesn't completely rule it out. Nonetheless, rainfall is nearly guaranteed across mid-Missouri throughout the day. The first wave of rainfall looks to impact overnight into the early morning hours on Sunday, holding strong into the noon hour. We will get a brief reprieve during the afternoon, though conditions will be muggy with lots of residual moisture in the air. A second system is anticipated in the evening hours, which will more impactful in the southern parts of the state. Luckily, the morning storms will likely hinder the severe threat of the second front, and depending on how long they last, could prevent the second wave entirely. That said, continue to plan your Father's Day around two rounds of storms. The most significant threat with these storms continues to be flooding. 1-3 inches of rain is expected by the end of the weekend, which can easily lead to areas of localized flooding. A flood watch is in effect for much of our northwestern counties until Sunday at 7 pm. As for next week, we look to stay dry after the weekend. Temperatures in the low 80s and partly cloudy skies will be the pattern through Wednesday, so enjoy the nice weather!
