Naloxone distribution boxes now available 24/7 in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Free naloxone distribution boxes are now available at locations across Columbia, the city announced in a news release on Friday.

Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, is a medication that can help reverse overdoses from opioids like heroin, fentanyl or prescription opioid medications.

The Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services said the boxes are similar to newspaper stands, and naloxone is available in each one free of charge. The boxes will be refilled weekly or as needed.

You can find one of the distribution boxes at each of the following locations:

  • Fire Station 1 - 201 Orr St.
  • Fire Station 2 - 1212 W. Worley St.
  • Fire Station 4 - 2300 Oakland Gravel Road
  • Fire Station 5 - 1400 Ballenger Lane
  • Fire Station 6 - 3112 Chapel Hill Road
  • Fire Station 7 - 400 Green Meadows Circle
  • Fire Station 8 - 2301 E. Nifong Blvd.
  • Fire Station 9 - 201 Blue Ridge Road
  • Fire Station 11 - 6909 Scott Boulevard
  • Activity & Recreation Center (ARC) - 1701 W Ash St.
  • Flat Branch Park - 300 S. Providence Road
  • Public Health and Human Services - 1005 W. Worley St.

The health department hosts monthly SAVE-A-LIFE events where participants can learn how to use naloxone. The next even will be on April 9 at Columbia College's Bixby Auditorium on Rangeline Street. The event goes from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
