Columbia man arrested in connection with vehicle pursuit in northeast Columbia Saturday night
COLUMBIA, Mo.. (KMIZ)
A Columbia man is accused of running away from Boone County deputies with a child Saturday night in northeast Columbia.
Capt. Brian Leer, of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office told ABC 17 News via email Cameron A. Baker, 19, of Columbia was arrested in connection with the pursuit. He was arrested on charges of fleeing a stop, endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk and first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.
According to Leer, a deputy saw a maroon vehicle speed through a red light on eastbound East Broadway at Trimble Road at 10:46 p.m.
A deputy tried to pull the vehicle over but it drove away and traveled northbound on Keene Street from East Broadway, according to Leer.
The vehicle then turned onto eastbound I-70 Drive SE--attempted to make a u-turn over the concrete roundabout median-- and went off the road.
The vehicle then landed in a ditch between I-70 Dr SE and Interstate 70 eastbound, Leer said.
Baker allegedly ran northbound across Interstate 70 toward Clark Lane with a child that was in the back of the vehicle. He allegedly told police the child was not his and he was babysitting.
It was later learned he did not have permission to take the vehicle and should not have been driving it, Leer said.
No injuries were reported.
An ABC 17 News reporter saw several Boone County Sheriff vehicles near the roundabout in front of the Drury Plaza Hotel around 11 p.m. and a car rolled over in a ditch.
Baker was listed on the Boone County jail roster Sunday night.
