Northeast Columbia residential fire ruled accidental; Cat dies in fire

Euphenie Andre

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A fire in the 2400 block of Lafayette Court Saturday evening was ruled an accident, Columbia Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Rodriguez said.

According to Rodriguez, crews were called to the scene at 5:55 p.m. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the living room where it originated, and put the flames out in 10 minutes. The living room received minor damage as a result of the fire.

Fire marshals determined the fire was caused by a candle, Rodriguez said.

No people were injured in the fire, but a cat died, according to Rodriguez. A second cat was rescued from the home.
