In ‘Ibelin’ and ‘Grand Theft Hamlet,’ video game realms draw filmmakers with virtual cameras

AP Film Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — A handful of new films don’t just deal with video games, they’re set inside them. The new Netflix documentary “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin” goes inside “World of Warcraft” to tell the life story of a young man who died of muscular dystrophy. “Grand Theft Hamlet” stages Shakespeare within “Grand Theft Auto.” The filmmakers say that as our lives grow increasingly virtual, movie directors have to keep up. That doesn’t mean, though, there aren’t some strange things about making a documentary within a game. In “Grand Theft Hamlet,” Hamlet wrestles with “to be or not to be” on a helipad. The cast sliding off the top of a blimp is just one of many concerns.
