An Ohio man charged in a fatal interstate rest stop stabbing in Nebraska enters an insanity plea

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — An Ohio man charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a couple at an Interstate 80 rest stop in Nebraska has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that 22-year-old James Thompson Jr. of Elyria, Ohio, entered the plea Tuesday. Thompson is also charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, fleeing arrest and a string of weapons counts in the June 19 stabbings of 72-year-old Gary Weaver and his 71-year-old wife, Mary Weaver, both of Eureka, Missouri. Thompson’s public defender had earlier raised questions about his client’s mental health, but Thompson was found competent to stand trial on Oct. 1.
