Alabama executes man convicted of killing delivery driver during a 1998 robbery attempt

Associated Press

ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has been executed for the fatal shooting of a delivery driver during a 1998 robbery attempt. Sixty-four-year-old Keith Edmund Gavin received a chemical injection Thursday evening at a prison in southwest Alabama. Gavin was convicted of capital murder in the March 6, 1998, shooting death of William Clayton Jr. in the city of Centre. Prosecutors said Clayton had stopped for cash at an ATM to take his wife to dinner when he was targeted. It was the third execution in Alabama this year and came shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Gavin’s own handwritten request to block it from going forward.
