Fourth of July weekend gas prices hit lowest level since 2021
Columbia, Mo. (KMIZ)
Fourth of July gas prices are at its lowest since 2021, according to Axios.
AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week, which is 2.8 million more than last year.
The projection comes from a GasBuddy estimate this week, stating that the $3.49 average cost for gas this Independence Day represents over a $1.30 decline compared to 2022.
The percentage of people traveling by car is up 4.8% from last year when 57.8 million people traveled by car, according to AAA.
We spoke with local resident Miles Clayborne from Columbia about his thoughts on the holiday gas prices.
"I think they are getting a little bit better," Clayborne said. "I work over at Nissan, so I fill up cars on a daily basis. It's nice to see sedans not topping $60 bucks, and obviously I ride a motorcycle, and it's nice to fill up my bike for only $6."
Although gas prices are down, hurricane season could change that.
We also spoke with ABC 17 Stormtrack weather meteorologist Sawyer Jackson, who shared insights on the severity of the upcoming hurricane season.
"Yes, we are expecting a pretty active hurricane season as we've already had Hurricane-now-Tropical Storm Beryl," Jackson said. "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts there will be 17 to 25 named storms, with 8 to 13 of those being hurricanes. So, we are definitely predicting a much more active hurricane season for the Atlantic."
CNN analysts blamed Hurricane Beryl — the earliest Category 5 storm on record — for helping to boost U.S. oil prices above $84 a barrel on Tuesday for the first time since late April.
