COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Valerie Carroll will be the lone candidate appearing on the Aug. 6 ballot for the First Ward seat on the Columbia City Council.

The deadline to file for the race was Tuesday. City Clerk Sheela Amin wrote in an email that Greg Launhardt submitted a petition to appear on the ballot on Tuesday afternoon, but did not have enough signatures from registered First Ward voters to appear on the ballot. At least 50 signatures from registered voters in the ward are required.

A special election will be held in August. The Ward 1 seat was vacated in April after voters recalled former Councilman Nick Knoth. Fifty-seven percent of First Ward voters voted in favor of the recall. Knoth was recalled following residents’ concerns over his job as a lobbyist for the Missouri Association of REALTORS.
