Cole County Sheriff’s Office warns of scammers spoofing bank phone numbers

MGN

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Residents have been receiving scam phone calls from numbers appearing to come from their bank, according to a Wednesday press release from the Cole County Sheriff’s Office.

Scammers are able to disguise their identity through Caller ID spoofing in order to appear that they are calling from a legitimate business, the release says. Scammers have been telling the people they call that they are with a bank’s fraud department and then ask for bank account information, the statement says.

The sheriff’s office recommends that if you answer one of these phone calls and if they start asking for personal information, hang up and call your bank. The sheriff’s office recommends telling your bank why you are calling and follow their steps to prevent fraud and identity theft.
