Tracking limited snow and extensive life threatening cold

TODAY: We're starting with widespread rain this morning, before switching to a wintry mix, and likely snow for most through the morning into the afternoon. Temperatures are near 40 at sunrise, but fall through the day, to put us near 20 this afternoon. Expect temperatures to fall another 20 degrees or so into the overnight hours. This will come via winds that may gust as high as 30-40 mph, while sustained near 20 mph. Snow today looks to only bring minor impacts. For details on snow, read our ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Day Blog.

TONIGHT: This creates dangerous cold that will last into next week. Temperatures fall into the single digits overnight, with wind chills registering in the 5-10 below zero range.

EXTENDED: The cold gets worse over the weekend, with temperatures on Saturday afternoon near 10 degrees at best, and winds near 10-20 mph from the cold air direction, gusting at times to 30 mph. This will continue into Saturday night, where wind and cold could produce wind chill values in the 20-30 below range, prompting a Wind Chill Warning from the National Weather Service through Noon on Sunday. Sunday will be about the coldest day, with highs forecast in the single digits. A round of snow will visit the region, but likely pass south of most of mid-Missouri, limiting accumulations to less than an inch for most. This round looks to target the Springfield area. Cold lingers through Wednesday morning, where we could see a brief return to the 20s or 30s for highs.
