Local businesses thrive as MU Football’s successful season boosts revenue

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Local businesses across Columbia see an increase in revenue as the University of Missouri football program has a stellar season.

For the first time since 1980, MU Football sold four consecutive sellout games. The hype around the Tigers led to a surge in shopping and engagement throughout Columbia.

Bud's BBQ is located at the heart of downtown Columbia, catching Tiger fans as they head to Farout Field. Owner Jason Paetzold said the success of the football program helps his business.

"A rising tide lifts all the ships in the harbor, and this season's been fantastic. You know, we're noticing just more and more people coming in each and every day for game days," Paetzold said.

For the first time since 1979, the Tigers hosted another top 16-ranked team Saturday.

As the football season nears its end and basketball season approaches, Paetzold mentioned that the higher number of basketball games compensates for the fewer large home crowds witnessed during the football season.

"Buds BBQ is all about getting people together to share a great experience. And we're thankful for being across the street from the university," said Paetzold. "Really thankful for our relationship with football and basketball. And it's our honor to look after the student-athletes,"

The increase in the town's population also requires fans to follow safety measures. Mizzou Athletics provides a comprehensive parking catalog that outlines diverse parking choices for fans, featuring prices ranging from free to $200. Fans proactively explore alternatives to navigate the chaotic parking challenges on game day.

"Well, to be honest, we get here early, and so we usually find a pretty good parking spot, and then our car just stays for the whole day," said Mizzou fan Stacy Gerhart.

Nov. 18 marks the Tigers' final home game against Florida. Local businesses are eager to conclude the football season on a high note and welcome the extended basketball season that lies ahead.
