Fire at MU barn continues to burn Wednesday morning

BOONE COUNTY, Mo (KMIZ)

A fire continues to burn Wednesday morning at the Foremost Dairy Research Center. What continues to burn is hay that was densely packed in the barn that held equipment and feed for the research center.

A staff member tells ABC 17 that staff has been here all night monitoring the fire. Right now the main concern of safety crews is cleanup and preventing runoff from contaminated fire water.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening a staff member of the research center noticed a fire coming from the barn and immediately called 911.

Firefighters believe the fire started on the east side of the barn, where a large amount of hay was being stored. The right side of the barn is completely collapsed and the left side is caved in.

No animals or people were inside the barn when it went up in flames. According to University spokesman, Christian Basi, there were cows in an adjacent building that were moved into a pasture area, but they were not in any immediate danger.

According to Boone County Assistant Fire Chief, Gale Blomenkamp, 15 safety workers responded to the scene. Three fire engines, three tankers, and ambulance unit, safety workers from MU health, and a squad from one of the fire stations.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and Blomenkamp tells ABC 17 he'd be surprised if an exact cause of the fire is found.
