Police say at least eight dogs died after air conditioning stopped cooling the back of a van that they were being transported in on their way to a training facility in Indiana as temperatures soared amid an intense heat wave that continued its grip on the country. In New York City, temperatures combined with humid, thick air could make it feel well over the century mark. The sizzling air has heated up everything from the ocean to swimming pools, making it difficult to cool off. Metro Phoenix hit its 30th consecutive day of 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius) on Saturday. Scientists expect July will be the hottest month globally on record and likely the warmest human civilization has seen.
