Weekend two of Show Me State games kick off with high heat indexes

COLUMBIA. Mo. (KMIZ)

The second weekend of the Show-Me State games kicked off on Friday morning.

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather team has issued a Weather Alert Day for dangerous heat index values expected to reach 100 -110 degree range on Friday.

According to the Show-Me State Games website some of the games will be played at outdoor sports complexes.

Organizers are encouraging everyone involved to stay safe with heat safety tips from MU Health Care.

"We have great partners at MU health care, we have some heat safety tips, we also have some heat related illness tips that we have been pushing to our athletes for several weeks now through our social media platforms," said Bruce Ungles, assistant director of Show-Me State Games.

Some ways to prevent heat-related illness are according to MU Health:

  • Drinking a lot of fluids.
  • Wear lightweight clothing.
  • Use sunglasses and use an umbrella to block the sun.
  • Take frequent drink breaks.
  • Mist yourself with a spray bottle

MU Healthcare professionals will be on-site at several of the outdoor complexes.

"We will have MU healthcare presence at many of our events. Whether it's EMTs with ambulances. We are also very fortunate to have trainers from Missouri orthopedic institute on site," said Ungles.
