Interim Chief of the Ashland Police Department set to start Wednesday

ASHLAND, Mo. (KMIZ)

The newly appointed interim police chief of the Ashland Police Department, Scott Young, is set to start Wednesday morning.

In a special meeting Tuesday evening, the Ashland Board of Aldermen appointed the former CPD Lieutenant. This comes after Ashland Police Chief Gabe Edwards was put on administrative leave a little over a week ago, for what the city says is personnel matter. But, it has yet to give further details about the matter.

Prior to Young's appointment, the Boone County Sheriff's Office has been overseeing patrol operations in Ashland since Edwards was put on leave.

Young says he is humbled the Ashland Board of Aldermen has given him the opportunity to serve the city.

"It's a great city obviously, it's very exciting," Young said. "It'll be a challenge, but we'll see how this goes."

He added that this appointment happened quickly, and as for how long he will be interim chief, that is still unknown.

"At this point, the safe thing to say is several months. There's no way to put a hard timeline on the search for a permanent chief," Young said.

Young worked at CPD for 20 years before retiring in May 2017. During his time at CPD, he was a sergeant over the patrol division, a SWAT member and apart of the narcotics unit.

After his retirement from CPD, Young continued to work at the department part-time as a trainer. He says he plans to continue his work there, but serving the Ashland community is his main priority.
