Show-Me State Games wraps up first weekend encouraging athletes to stay cool
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
As temperatures rise, and this summer being the hottest globally on record, the Show Me State Games wants to make sure participants stay safe in the heat.
Their website has a message posted, urging participants and spectators to stay hydrated and find shady cool areas when they can. The message also includes a flyer from MU Health with tips to prevent heat exhaustion and dehydration.
According to MU Health, to avoid dehydration:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Make sure you are drinking more fluids than you are losing.
- Avoid caffeinated tea, coffee, soda and alcohol.
- Consider an electrolyte solution of sports drinks like Pedialyte and Gatorade.
To avoid heat stroke:
- Stay hydrated.
- During outdoor activities take frequent breaks.
- Mist yourself with a spray bottle if you get hot.
If a heat stroke does occur call 911 immediately.
The Show Me Games is a non-profit hosted by MU and gives Missouri residents the opportunity to play sports from basketball to mini-golf. It has become the largest state games in the nation bringing over 36,000 spectators and athletes to Columbia last year.
Weekend one ends Sunday, July 23, but weekend two is set to start Friday July 28.
