Health and safety officials monitoring the Boone County Fair ahead of high temperatures
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
With temperatures expected to rise up to 95 degrees on Wednesday, those planning on attending activities at the fair should be prepared to face the heat.
According to the CDC, to avoid heat exhaustion you should:
- Wear appropriate clothing: choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
- Remember to wear sunscreen: sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated
- Stay hydrated: don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink
- Stay away from sugary or alcoholic drinks: these actually cause individuals to lose more body fluid
Assistant Fire Chief of Columbia Fire Jerry Jenkins, tells ABC 17 News that fire crews keep a close eye on all weather conditions which could affect fair attendees.
"If we see that the weather conditions are going to change and affect the fair goers, we'll get with the fair board and come up with a plan to either shut the fair down, relocate people into one of the colosseums or shelter in place," Jenkins said.
The Boone County Fair runs through Saturday.
