Columbia Police Department names interim chief
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia officials said Friday that Matt Stephens will serve as the interim police chief for the Columbia Police Department beginning July 31.
Stephens is currently assistant chief of CPD's Special Services Bureau and is a Columbia native. He has been with the department since 2005, working as a patrol officer, sergeant and lieutenant during his time with the police department.
"I am thankful that Stephens has agreed to step into this role in this time of transition for the City of Columbia," City Manager De’Carlon Seewood said. "He has proven his ability as an effective leader, and I am confident he will help make this transition as smooth as possible for the Department and the City."
Current Police Chief Geoff Jones announced he would be retiring on Aug. 1 after serving more than 24 years with the department. The city has begun a national search for his replacement.
