Local fireworks store hosts safety demonstration ahead of Fourth of July

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Spirit of '76 held a Safety Saturday class to teach families basic rules of firework safety before the holiday.

Kids of all ages watched as Store Manager Brian Gilmore gave customers some tips before they purchased fireworks of their own.

Gilmore has there tips to keep people safe this holiday weekend:

  1. Read the directions of each firework to ensure it is set up the right way
  2. Always have a water source nearby.
  3. Walk away calmly as soon as the firework is lit.

This is the third annual safety demonstration Spirit of '76 has held and Gilmore shares why demonstrations like this one is so important.

"We all know that a lot of people end up in the emergency room due to burns and stuff like that with fireworks  due to improper use so i just wanted to try and get the kids here, get them excited about fireworks and being able to do it in a safe manner that keeps everyone safe and happy for the Fourth of July," Gilmore said.

It is illegal to set off fireworks in Columbia city limits, the only legal fireworks are sparklers.
