Columbia Police Department to hold meetings discussing community safety

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

This week, the Columbia Police Department is holding two meetings to discuss crime and safety in Columbia. The meetings will be held this Monday and Thursday.

One meeting will be held in the north district of Columbia, the other in the south district and each meeting will discuss the crime trends in the specific district.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol - in 2022 violent crime in Columbia was down 6.5 percent from 2021 and property crime was up almost 5% from 2021 to 2022.

Assistant Chief of Police, Jill Schlude tells ABC 17 what to expect.

"It's obvious people worry a lot about shootings, homicides things going on and we do to and those are important," Schlude said. "Theres also a lot of things we consider quality of crimes and those are  neighborhoods where we have people repeatedly getting their packages stolen off their porches and that's an issue."

She also shares that she hopes the meetings end with people knowing the right information about crime in their district.

"We're just hoping to share information with the public that they can use, maybe deal with some perceptions or misinformation that might be out there that people get, and give them the opportunity to meet a lot of new members."  Schlude said.
