Today’s college student-athletes have an unprecedented opportunity to monetize their name, image and likeness thanks to a 2021 NCAA rule change that lifted restrictions on such activities. Because the territory is so new and the income opportunities are potentially life-changing, the student-athletes making NIL income may need guidance managing their money as they juggle the responsibilities of academics and athletics. A college professor, a former Olympian-turned-certified financial planner, a student-athlete and an attorney offer advice for this new cohort of earners that straddles the line between amateur and professional.
