Man convicted of killing two Randolph County jailers set to be executed Tuesday

BONNE TERRE, Mo. (KMIZ)

The man convicted of killing two Randolph County jailers during a break-out attempt in 2000 is set to be put to death Tuesday evening.

This follows recent information which paused his execution, revealing a juror at his 2010 resentencing only read at a third to fourth-grade level.

The latest comments about the case came from Governor Mike Parson. 42-year-old Michael Tisius was denied clemency by Governor Parson on Monday and will be the third person in Missouri and the twelfth person nationally to be executed this year.

Tisius who was convicted of killing two officers, Leon Egley and Jason Action in 2000.

Officials say it was a jailbreak gone wrong and resulted in Tisius shooting and killing two unarmed jail guards.

Court records show Tisius was behind bars for a misdemeanor charge in 2000 and said he planned to help another inmate escape after his release.

Defense attorneys argued the killings were not premeditated and that Tisius intended to order the jailers into a holding cell to free inmates. Recently some have argued against the execution and say at the time of the crime, Tisius was 19-years-old and faced neglect as a child.

The 42-year-old is set to receive a lethal injection Tuesday evening at the state prison in Bonne Terre.
