Open burn season set to begin in Jefferson City

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

According to city ordinance, Jefferson City residents are now allowed to burn yard waste on their property.

The burn ordinance goes into effect from November 1st until March 1st each year.

Small sticks, grass clippings and leaves all fall under the category of yard waste allowed to be burned from sunrise to sunset.

Breaking the rules of the ordinance can potentially result in a fine and citation. People are encouraged to be thoughtful of neighbors, especially on days where it is warm. Windows may be open and the smoke from outdoor burns can become a nuisance or health complication for some.

According to ABC 17's Stormtrack Chief Meteorologist Jessica Hafner, it's important to pay attention to outside conditions while burning.

"Make sure to check weather conditions," Hafner said. "It's smart to skip a windy day or when it's realy dry outside when burning."

Although burning is now allowed, Fire Officials have reminded people that yard waste can be dropped off for free at the compost facility as an alternative to burning. The facility is located at 2417 South Ridge Drive, Jefferson City, Mo.

Unlike Jefferson City, Columbia does not allow burning inside city limits unless a permit is acquired. Guidelines for a permit can be found on Columbia's website here.

The ban on outdoor burns does not include recreation fires. According to section 202 of the 2015 International Fire Code, a recreational fire can be described as a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height for pleasure. Recreational fires can be used for a range of things including religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes.

A yard waste program in Columbia also provides areas for waste to be turned into mulch. These areas can be used free of charge for residents of the city. They can be found near Parkside Drive and Capen Park.
