Groups offer ways for trick-or-treaters to stay safe this Halloween
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
As Mid-Missouri families consider their trick-or-treat plans Monday night, officials offer a few ways to have a safe Halloween.
AAA recommends buying or creating a noticeable costume. The organization suggests using lights or bright and reflective materials to make trick-or-treaters easy to see. Parents can add reflective tape to costumes and treat buckets or bags as another option.
The group also recommends that parents or guardians accompany younger trick-or-treaters until at least 12 years old. Families can use Halloween to remind their children to use crosswalks and to avoid walking in front of, behind, or between parked vehicles.
Drivers should remember to slow down, watch for children in the street, and avoid cutting through residential areas where trick-or-treaters might be present.
According to SafeKids.org, a child is more than twice as likely to get hit and killed by a vehicle on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
Officials also suggest checking out other Halloween events instead of traditional trick-or-treating. Events are scheduled in Columbia and Jefferson City.
