MAP testing scores still below pre-pandemic levels

The state released new student performance testing results Tuesday showing scores are still below pre-pandemic levels.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released preliminary statewide data from the 2021-22 end-of-course assessments, known as MAP testing.
The data shows that there was improvement compared to last year's scores. The results were mixed by grade level.
According to a news release, math and science scores increased in all grades and courses. Social studies and government scores decreased. English was mixed by grade level, with the only gains reported in fifth grade and English I.
State education leaders said there were disruptions during the last school year.
“Districts and charter schools across the state continued to face unique challenges during the 2021-22 school year while working hard to focus on the well-being and academic success of students,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “Nothing about this past school year was typical. We must remain vigilant in educating our students and I urge everyone to review the data through an informational lens, using these key takeaways to shape how state and local resources are best deployed to support ongoing student success.”
A report from DESE says that the pandemic disrupted student learning. The pandemic appeared to affect math more than English, with math seeing a greater loss of instructional time.
Fifth graders lost the most instructional time when compared to older grades.
The report also notes that more students were tested this year than last year.
