Boone County Coalition to End Homelessness hosted resource event Thursday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Several groups and organizations offered resources to the homeless community in Columbia on Thursday.

The Boone County Coalition to End Homelessness hosted its Project Homeless Connect event at the Missouri United Methodist Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The coalition described the bi-annual event as a one-stop shop event that connects unsheltered people with community services.

Those who attended Project Homeless Connect got access to more than 20 community health and human service providers. That includes free HIV testing, COVID-19 vaccines, flu shots, dental screenings, and blood pressure checks.

The Central Missouri Human Society also provided preventative health care for pets including dog vaccines, spay/neuter vouchers, and flea/tick prevention.

Attendees also got a free lunch and a backpack filled with basic hygiene and dental products.

Jessica Macy, a spokesperson for the Boone County Coalition to End Homelessness, said that besides the pet care another popular service of the day was free haircuts provided by two local stylists.

"I don't know how much hair is getting cut up there, but there is a ton of hair on the floor," said Macy.

Macy also said the Boone County Coalition to End Homelessness is already planning for the next event in February. Local vendors who want to share their goods or services can sign up for a table at their website once the next date is posted.
